Sonny's Smokehouse
About This Spot
Sonny's Smokehouse feels like a treasured stop along the familiar roads of Ackerman—a spot where time slows just enough for you to settle into the warm, inviting hum of genuine southern hospitality. As you pull up, the unassuming exterior hints at something deeper within: a steady rhythm of folks unwinding, laughter drifting through the air, and the unmistakable scent of smoke curling over the wooden tables inside.
The pace here is unhurried, the kind of place where family gatherings and easy conversations flow naturally. Inside, the modest dining room feels like a shared living room, filled with the quiet comfort that comes from knowing you’re in a place made for returning to. It’s not about flashy fanfare but about something comforting and honest: good people, solid food, and a welcoming atmosphere where the staff treat you like an old friend, not just a visitor.
Sonny’s kitchen is where the heart of the experience truly lies. The slow-smoked flavors, whether in the tender pulled pork or the perfectly seasoned brisket, speak of patience and care. Every BBQ dish carries that nuanced, deeply satisfying smoke that lingers just right—each bite a reminder of southern traditions done well and without pretense. The side of slaw offers a crisp, refreshing counterpoint, while the sweet tea, served just as it should be, rounds out the meal effortlessly.
What makes Sonny’s Smokehouse special is the way it invites you to pause and savor more than just the food. It’s a place woven into the fabric of the community, a familiar waypoint for neighbors and travelers alike, where stories are shared over ribs that fall off the bone and plates piled satisfyingly high. For anyone passing through or seeking a place that feels rooted and real, Sonny’s offers a quiet, soulful slice of southern life worth discovering.

It's Country and it's Good. The 1/2 Smoked Chicken was Fall Off The Bone Good!!! The smoke flavor was delicious. The Baked Beans were real good. The slaw was basic but at least it wasn't full of too much mayo. The building to the left is the dining area. The place doesn't look like much the food is delicious. If I'm in town again, I'll come back and try some brisket.

Best barbecue we've ever had, and we travel around quite a bit to SEC football games and try BBQ throughout the south. This is by far #1! The staff and Pitmaster treated us like old friends. You won't find better service anywhere on the globe. The brisket sandwich and ribeye sandwich were A+++. Ditto bbq chicken. Sweet tea was perfect as well! Would and WILL go back.

This place is great. Stopped in on a motorcycle ride with my son. The brisket and pulled pork were some of the best I've had. The staff was friendly and welcoming, the portions were large, and the price was reasonable. It's a new destination for us when we are out biking. I want to try the steaks, but the brisket was so good I'm not sure I can pass it up next time I'm there. Bring cash as they don't take plastic, and do yourself a favor and skip breakfast before you go there so you can eat more of their amazing food!

BBQ sandwich with a side of slaw. Might be the best BBQ I've ever had! Love the dill pickle in the slaw, delish.

BBQ potato was huge and delicious. Recommend. The pork was moist and scrumptious. Outdoor seating not necessarily scenic but functional. Locals coming and going so obviously an institution of sorts. Sauce had a specific tang. Loved it. Bathrooms may not really be for public, but we're kind of scary given that cleaned by same folks serving food.

The epitome of a “hole-in-the-wall” bbq joint! Sonny does more than just make some of the best brisket I’ve had, didn’t even need sauce and just melted in your mouth, but also engaged with my friends and I and told us some of the story behind the scenes. The air was filled with rich hickory smoke, the scent of well aged meats, and humility. We’ll return if we’re ever in the area, for sure!
